Autumn Garden Shed Prep: Your Easyshed 2026 Checklist

Autumn has officially rolled in. Cooler days, falling leaves, and a drizzle every now and then. It’s the best time to give your garden shed a bit of TLC. Spending a few hours prepping now keeps your shed organised, your tools in top nick, and your space ready for whatever comes next.

Clean and Declutter

Start by giving your shed a proper sweep. Leaves, dust, and items you stashed during the summer are piling up (maybe even the holidays?). Grab a broom, a dustpan, or go ham with a leaf blower and toss the mess.

While you’re at it, check for signs of pests or mould. Spiders, ants, and termites, can settle in if you leave things lying around. Clearing clutter now makes it easier to spot any trouble and keeps your shed functional and tidy.

Inspect the Shed

Once it’s clean, give your shed a good once-over.

  • Roof: Check for loose panels, leaks, or gutters blocked with leaves.
  • Walls & Base: Keep an eye out for cracks, rust, or damp patches.
  • Doors & Locks: Make sure doors open smoothly and locks work properly.

Fixing minor issues now is way easier than dealing with a bigger headache later.

Give Your Tools Some Love

Your tools did a lot of heavy lifting over the summer, so they deserve a bit of care before winter hits.

  • Sharpen pruners, shears, and spades. Blunt tools make gardening harder and can damage plants.
  • Oil any metal parts to prevent rusting.
  • Hang tools off the floor on hooks or shelves to avoid getting them damp.

Taking care of your tools now ensures they’re ready to roll once spring comes knocking.

Autumn Storage Solution

Autumn is also a good time to think about whether you need more storage. Holiday decor from the past year, summer cushions, hoses, old pots, Uncle Tim’s bike he swears he’ll fix up... these things pile on quick when left unchecked.

  • Do an inventory check and see which items are worth keeping around.
  • Use labels or separate boxes for trinkets, collectibles, and objects that carry sentiment. Keep these off the ground and store them safely.
  • Throw things out! Part of keeping your shed tidy is inevitably tossing things that are no longer needed. Is it something you’ll use in the next week or two? A specific holiday? If you’re drawing a blank – maybe it’s time to wheel it out and bin it.

Shed Maintenance and Safety Prep

Do these now before slipping into the autumn lull.

  • Drainage: Clear gutters and paths around the shed to stop puddles forming.
  • Branches: Trim any overhanging trees that could damage the roof when strong winds roll by.
  • Ventilation: Make sure the shed can breathe. Dampness and condensation can cause rust, mould, or mildew if airflow is poor.

These simple steps keep your shed in tip-top shape and will reduce the likelihood of unwelcome surprises over the cooler months.

Autumn Prep Pays Off

Spending a few hours to keep your shed, tools, and gear is a solid way to kick off the season. A tidy, organised shed saves time, prevents damage, and makes your outdoor space easier to enjoy all year.

And it doesn’t have to be boring and tedious work. Get the family in on it, call over some friends, blast some tunes, grab a cuppa, and turn your autumn shed prep into a new core memory.
